      • Breast Feeding and Fasting
      Maryam D.

Sometimes I ask myself, what made Satan to be Satan after years of praying? I tell myself Satan wants to worship God, the way he wanted not as God wants him to do.
Although God has named women and men equally in praying but I think the complexity in women creations has led to some flexibilities in the way she should pray Lord, as some times her duty is to do some worshiping and sometimes not to do it. The rules for women changes according to their conditions which is obviously an approach to facilitate their obedience to God; consider fasting for women in this case.

Not to be obsessed with surface
Motherhood is a blessing that God has made women deserve it; and also has granted them higher degrees by which one can free herself from the earthy themes and achieve the real meaning of creation and the world. The spirit of worshiping God cannot be interpreted according to earthy themes of our actions and the only attributed meaning to them is Obedience of Allah, the creator of this world. Women's life is full of the moments of practically learning obedience.
A women without relying on the Powerful Creator of the world and the strong believes of  worshiping God, cannot go ahead through the first moments of pregnancy to the complicated process of giving birth, and through the hard path of child bearing and training. So it is really important that women learn their duties before God to succeed. Unfortunately, there are women obsessed with their wrong thoughts. Going to extremes, some hurt their body and soul and to make it worse; they even spread their wrong attitudes and trigger negative views in others to Islam. Fasting in Ramadan during menstruation, pregnancy and breast feeding, is an example of this wrong believes.

      Conditional fasting
Most pregnant women react to fasting in Ramadan in two contradictory manners. Some, who just feel that fasting is not good for them, avoid doing it and others insist to be fast even while they are spending their last months of pregnancy! Unfortunately, most of women don't know what to do, they don't know whether these long hours of thirst and hunger would leave bad effects on their breast feeding or on their foes?
There are a lot of questions regarding fasting in pregnancy and breast feeding; and these women should be aware that it is not important to be fast or not but their priority is to fulfill the responsibilities and doing duties that God has asked for.

According to medical sciences and nutrition, fasting depends on individual characteristics, body condition, the medical background, the working situation etc. A recent study shows that there is not a relationship between the weight of babies after birth and IQ and the fasting of mother. Though based on Schinetif findings, during the first three months of pregnancy, especially the first right weeks, due to the formation of brain cells, mother should avoid fasting. The lack of sugar badly affects the general growth of foes which gets worth during long hours of fasting in hot summers.
The fasting is not recommended in the last three months of pregnancy, because as the foes energy is obtained from mothers blood glucose; fasting would lead to increase of fat usage of the mother that follows the increase of glucose of her blood, which enters into the fetal circulation through the placenta and damages his nervous system. Generally it is suggested that women who have not any special medical background are able to fast during second three months of pregnancy under the observation of their doctors. In many narrations the breaking of fast or not fasting is left to the mother's and the priority is mother and foes' health.
For instance it is said: if the mother is not able to employ a nanny, she should break her fast and breast feed the baby; her fast should be compensated later.
Fasting in women who are breast feeding wouldn't cause any problem if it is followed by a calcium, iron and vitamins rich diet; though it is not recommended in the first six month of breast feeding, because mother's milk is the only source of food for the baby and long hours of hunger would leave negative effect on mothers' milk, especially a noticeable decrease in its amount.
To conclude, we can say that fasting in pregnancy and while breast feeding depends on mothers and babies condition; though understanding the condition and the duty according to situation is the first step in obedience of God here.

A point from The Prophet (PBUH)
Islam has noticeably cared about pregnancy and breast feeding; so that the holy Prophet (PBUH) says:
When a woman gets pregnant; she is rewarded as a fast person fighting in the path of Allah by his life and his capital, who is also praying all night long. When she is giving birth, the rewards from God is invaluable, when she is breast feeding, each time the baby sucks her breast, she is rewarded as she has freed a slave of Ismail's (PBUH) children. And when she is done; an angle tells: definitely you are forgiven today; restart your acts.
Considering the meaning of this hadith, we come to this point that even when a women is apparently away from the normal themes of praying; not only she is not refrained from her path to perfection but also its a new stage that facilitate her way. How greatly it would be, if Muslim women walk in their bath of obedience consciously, believing in God's rules.
