    • Tips to Prevent Bad Breath in Ramadan
  • Comoiled by: Samir B.
One of the most common issues in Ramadan is Halitosis (bad breath) which bothers the person himself and also those around him.
It occurs as a result of fat burning of body after long hours of hunger and thirst and the ending of blood glucose. Fat burning lead to production of ''ketone'' and its smell exist through breath; its amount is not the same in all people.
In the first days of Ramadan, as the liver is not ready to burn a lot of fat, the ketone production is high and consequently the halitosis is high too. The ketone production is rather low in those who fast in other months of the year, because their liver is much more ready to burn extra fat.
It is worth noticing that Muslim should be neat and smell good in Ramadan so that non-Muslims wouldn't blame them for being fast. It's good to know that this process of bad breath is natural and no special treatment is required. Following just some simple steps would reduce halitosis.

The breath smell of a fast Muslim before God

Jaffar Ibn Muhammada (A.S) says: ''God asked Moses: why aren't you praying and talking to me? Moses replied: I'm fast and I'm afraid the breath of a fast person smells bad. God answered: O Moses! The breath smell of a fast servant before me is better that musk.'' (1)
    He also says:
''If a person fasts in a hot day and became thirsty; God sent thousand angels to touch his face and give him good news till iftar; while he breaks his fast, God says: what a great smell you have! O My angles! See I forgive him'' (2).
However, there are many narrations regarding the importance of caring about mouth heath, especially while being fast which emphasizes brushing even during the day.

    Reasons of bad breath
Gingivitis, tooth decay and break down, left food among tissue or dental filling or the accumulation of food backward of the mouth, are the main reasons of bad breath.
Diseases such as sinusitis, ear, throat, pharynx, sinus and respiratory tract infections and lungs or gastrointestinal tract infections besides gastrointestinal diseases such as peptic ulcers are due to H. pylori can cause bad breath which requires medical treatment to be controlled.
Dryness of the mouth, as a result of decrease in salivary secretion due to inadequate consumption of water and fluids in the dawn also lead to bad breath in some people.
Diabetes also causes the reducation of salivary secretion, dryness of mouth and then bad breath.
Sometimes the bad breath is due to not eating food in the dawn. So the body should burn fat reserves and ketone is produced here.
For some others, over consumption of food that are not appropriate to be used together causes bad breath.
Not brushing or using dental floss is also another reason for halitosis.
Using tobacco products and smoking are the main reasons for bad breath not only in Ramadan but also in other days.
Now that we have recognized the factors that lead to bad breath, we can provide some ways to reduce it.

    Solutions

The best way to prevent bad breath is the treatment of your mouth and dental problems before fasting, Repairing decayed teeth, scaling and gum problems to reduce microbial plaque (the white thin layer on the tooth including dead cells, food leftovers and microbes). This plaque sticks to teeth and wouldn't be washed away by water, appropriate methods of brushing should be employed to remove it.
Use antibiotics under the observation of doctors to cure infections.
Don't forget to eat food in the dawn.
Drink two or three glasses of water.
Avoid eating food like garlic and onion or spices.
    Stop smoking.
Use fresh vegetables and fruit, particularly those with good smell like parsley, rosemary, coriander, dill, cardamom seeds, green tea and cinnamon.
Don't use too hot, spicy, sour and acidic food as they erode the Villi of mouth and lead to dryness of mouth and consequently as breath.
572_1_mouth.jpgRamadan is a good time to practice the basics of true eating. Stop over consumption of food, for instance, if you use coffee or tea a lot, avoid drinking dark and hot tea in dawn , however, it seems to keep you fresh for two hours after eating in dawn, but during the day it lead to dryness of food. Instead, use soft food such as Kheer.
Sour fruits and vegetables also lead to dryness of mouth, it's better to avoid them.
Limit the consumption of dried food.
Using peppermint extract before sleep and after eating food in dawn is also a good way to treat digestive problems due to fermentation of food and bad breath.
Manage your time in the dawn to be able to brush and using tooth floss; remove food leftovers among teeth. Back area of your mouth is a good place for accumulation of food; brush your mouth using a soft brush or a sterile.
Washing mouth for one minute using antibacterial and alcohol free mouthwash, is another good way to stop bad breath. These mouthwashes leave positive effect on the strength of gum too. Daily use of ''Chlorhexidine'' mouthwash is also suggested.
Those using prosthesis (removable or fixed denture) should clean the area under it; keep orthodontic plaque or orthodontic brackets clean too.
Those who have not blood pressure problems should employ water-salt to wash their mouth.
Many people avoid brushing while fasting, which is definitely wrong; there is not a contradiction between brushing and fasting.
Don't forget brushing and tooth floss after iftar.
Drink enough water after iftar till dawn to refrain bad breath while fasting.
